From behind a neighboring shed, he watched the three strangers enter Isla’s general store. He’d been told to watch for obvious newcomers, though he wasn’t given any additional details. These three stuck out like a sore thumb.

The older man looked harmless enough, as did the woman. The second man carried himself differently than his compatriots. He reeked of military, maybe even the government, though pinpointing which one would be difficult. But based on the man’s ethnicity, he assumed the guy was from one of the Middle Eastern countries. The others were too. Unless he was really a political extremist, then that would make him Mossad or possibly Interpol.

He edged out of hiding, feeling the sharp breeze sting his face and dry out his eyes. Even though he had grown up here in the Northwest Highlands, the chilling air was still a discomfort to him. It mostly affected his hands. He dug them deeper into his pockets and angled his face away from the coastline.

He kept his footsteps light and made his way toward the parked Royal Mail van. Edward was around back having lunch with his wife in the barn behind the store. Emma rented the building from Isla to use as a workshop for her lawn art projects. Emma’s work was impressive, and she sold it during the weekend farmers' market over in Shieldaig.

He made sure the parking lot was devoid of life before entering it. He couldn’t see much from here, so he moved toward Edward’s van and slinked around the front of it, instantly getting a better view of the three visitors moving about inside. He could see them through one of the windows, standing near the jackets talking to someone out of view.

Isla.

His hand slid out of his pocket, phone and all. He dialed and lifted the device to his ear.

“Yes?”

“You were right. We have some new friends at Isla’s store.”

“Thoughts?”

He glanced back at the storefront. “So far, they seem harmless enough.”

“Very good. Keep an eye on them.”

“And if they should come up the road?”

“Let them. You are not to engage. Do you understand?”

“Aye.” The front door opened. “Shite! Gotta go.”
